Car boot sales have been popular in the UK for the last 30 years, with hundreds of people gathering in a field every Sunday to buy and sell second hand goods. Anything can be bought at a car boot sale, from a slow cooker, to a secondhand used mac pro ! Sellers will often be trying to clear out unwanted clothes, furniture, or equipment that they no longer use. Buyers at car boot sales range from bargain-hunters, to antique collectors, or even ‘professional car booters’; who scout out the real bargains, and sell them-on at a later date.
Car boot sales are often run for charity purposes, where the seller’s fee for the pitch is partially or totally donated to charity. They can take place pretty much anywhere with an open space; from school fields, to car parks. They often start at 8 or 9am, and run until around midday, or until people decide to go home.
With the recession hitting people hard, car boot sales have seen a boost in both sellers, and buyers. The buyers are sacrificing shopping in town centres and shopping centres in order to find a bargain. The sellers are often trying to make enough money to afford a luxury such as an annual holiday.
One area that sells exceptionally well at car boot sales is pet accessories. From bird cages, to dog leads, and from cat collars, to fish tanks. Some say the real winners at a car boot sale are the people selling refreshments! As it’s a Sunday in the UK, it’s probably cold or raining. People flock to the stall selling tea and buy it by the gallon! So next time you’re thinking of going to a car boot sale, make sure you take your teabags, you’ll make a fortune!
