The Truth about Botox Treatment

Sydney Botulinum injections (B.tox for short) is fast becoming the latest style amongst Sydney’s fashionable set and has become a grooming necessity for people in the Harbour City. Nevertheless I am often stunned when I listen to the number of myths and half truths which surround this procedure. I have listed below a selection of the more myths that I hear day in day out in Star Cosmetic Medicine, where I work as a doctor.

Urban Legend no. 1: I may lose my facial expressions!

Under the skin of the face are approximately sixty muscles. The extended use of these muscles over a period of time can result in line formation. If too much B.tox is used the muscles of expression can sometimes become somewhat less expressive. The dosage injected by virtually all doctors result in you looking refreshed, yet you will still appear just as expressive.

By employing tiny amounts of the B.tox in just the right spot facial expression is kept whilst the wrinkles undergo a softening effect.

Urban Legend no. 2: B.tox is poisonous!
This to some extent is right. Botulinum Toxin Type A is the exact scientific nomenclature. In massive quantities it can result in loss of muscle tone or can make you very sick.

Chemists have an old saying that ‘everything is a poison - all depending on the dose’. A large amount of any medication may cause sickness. If you drink too much water it will kill you.

Urban Legend no. 3: B.tox will be painful!
In our clinic Star Cosmetic Medicine the doctor will use needles finer than a hair. Some people have compared the shots to a bug bite. It unquestionably is less traumatic than something like a blood test.

Urban Legend no. 4: My face will be numb!
False. B.tox works on the junction between the nerve and the facial muscle, not the nerves of sensation. B.tox just targets the relaxation of muscular tissues.

Urban Legend no. 5. Once you begin getting B.tox you must continue otherwise you will age quicker than before!
Once Again this is simply wrong.

You can expect B.tox to last for upwards of three months. Any further treatments after the initial consultation usually last a little longer. The lines will gradually return as the muscle returns to normal. However they will certainly not be any more pronounced than before.

As A Matter Of Fact any lines should be be softer than if you hadn’t had B.tox - even should you don’t repeat the therapy. Due to the fact that your facial muscles and skin have had a rest whilst the B.tox was working.
